The Afghan Hound

Grooming

The Afghan-hound’s hairy body needs high maintenance in order to see them in their optimum wonderful looks. The Afghan-Hound’s long, smooth and silky fur needs to be regularly combed and if you want to, you can fashion it according to your desired hair style. Because of its naturally long furs, most of the Afghan-Hound owners give them very trendy and head-turning hair styles and make them participate on pet shows.

Mood

The Afghan Hound is noted for its being aloof, uncooperative and difficult to train. Sometimes if you give them a command, it will most likely do its own thing rather than obey. If you are going to teach it a trick, make sure that it is on the mood to follow you or else, it will only snob you and turn its furry back on you. However, if you happen to see them on their joyous and happy moments, they are very energetic and playful. Their happy moment is the ideal time for you to teach them tricks.

With Children

The Afghan Hound behaves gently while amongst children. This is often seen as a “catlike” characteristic of the dog. It forms strong bonds with children whom they are always with. This breed is sensitive but sometimes it is reluctant to respond when called.

Training & Exercise

This breed is independent and self-willed, hence consistent and continuous training is necessary. It is one of the fastest running dogs on the land – it can run for 40 miles per hour – hence the Afghan Hound needs to regularly exercise his legs. A 30-minute walk everyday is good, but it is best to let him roam around in a safe area. High level of motivation for the dog is needed when training this breed.

Health & Life Expectancy

Most of the Afghan-Hounds live for about 10-12 years. Depending on how well you treat it, it can even outlive the estimated amount of its life expectancy. According to the UK Kennel Club Survey, the most common causes of Afghan-Hound’s death are cancer, old age, urologic and cardiac arrest.
