Also known as the English beagle, the Beagle is a pack hunter so it values company and hates to walk alone. At first glance you might mistake it to be a Fox Hound, but if you take a closer look, it has softer and longer ears and shorter legs. You might have known the most popular Beagle character in the world – Snoopy.
Physical Appearance
The Beagle’s average size for males and females is not that different from one another. They grow for about 13 – 15 in and weigh about 18 -30 lbs. They have a slightly domed skull and squarely-built body. They also have large hazel-colored eyes that are set apart. The Beagle has black and broad nostrils, has round and firm feet and moderately high tail.
They also have manageable coats that appear in tricolors. Tan, black and white are the most common base colors of their fur.
Grooming
The Beagle has soft, short-hair that is easy to maintain. You can use mild soap from time to time. This type of dog is an average shredder.
Mood
The Beagle is a merry and gentle breed. They are neither aggressive nor timid. They love to walk with company and enjoy the presence of its master. They are very friendly; hence they make a very bad guard dogs. It would even welcome unfamiliar faces on its territory. However, you also need to get used to its bark, for it is one of the loudest among breeds.
With Children
This dog breed is very friendly and active. The children would definitely enjoy the Beagle’s company anytime. They sometimes develop anxiety when left alone for a long time, hence it would be best to always keep them company.
Training & Exercise
Beagles are hard to train. While they respond to food-reward training and exercise, the Beagles are easily distracted and bored especially if they pick up an interesting scent on the area.
If you are living in an apartment, you should at least give time for your Beagle to have exercise otherwise it will become bored and anxious all the time.
Health & Life Expectancy
The Beagles normally live for about 12 -15 years. They do not have any inherited health problems but be sure to watch out for the hemophilia A, cataracts and on some occasions, deafness. The most common health problems observed on the Beagles are intervertebral disc disease, hypothyroidism and dwarfism. They could also have epilepsy but this can be controlled under strict medication.
The Beagle is a very interesting pet and you will not encounter any problem while taking care of it. Just make sure that you allow it to play and explore outdoors once in a while. Remember that the Beagles are pack hunters and it hates to be alone. Your presence and company is very important in its character development.
