The Bichon Frise’ is a breed of dog, small in appearance, belonging to the Bichon family. This breed is very popular, similar to, but larger than the Maltse breed. Daily grooming is necessary to keep this kind up to its shape; but otherwise this breed is an excellent companion both to grown-ups and children.

Fascinating Facts

The Bichon Frise is a descendent of the water spaniel, which originally came from the Mediterranean region. They were first discovered by Spanish sailors and then were taken to the land of Italy by Italian sailors, and soon the Bichon Frise’ became a part of the Italian culture. In 1955 the Bichon Frise were taken to the U.S.A. where they were breeded and consequently the Bichon spread to all of U.S.A. and then the world. 

Physical Appearance

The Bichon Frise is small in appearance weighing 19-25 pounds and standing more or less at 20 to 35 cms, with a black nose and dark and round eyes. It has curly fur spread all over its body and a silk like undercoat. Its head and legs are proportional to its body and its ears and tail are generally not trimmed, as done in the cases of many other such breeds. 

 

 

Grooming

The Bichon Frise is a dog that does not generally shed but it requires a lot of attention towards grooming. It requires frequent trimming, brushing and bathing to look its peak and also requires removing all its loose hairs and the curls to look shapely enough. 

Mood

The Bichon Frise is generally said to be merry and of a playful and cheerful temperament and according to k-9 standards it is sensitive, affectionate and also very gentle. These kinds of dogs are regarded to be very good companions to all ages.

With Children

The Bichon Frise is termed to be a very good companion for children, mainly because of its gentleness and affection. These kinds of dogs are practically harmless, and can be trusted with children over 8 or 9 years of age.

Training & Exercise

Bichon Frises’ can be housetrained but it has to be started early and have to be continued for a longer time than other breeds to have the dog properly trained, physically as well as mentally. Otherwise Bichon Frise is very responsive to humans and if properly trained can be a great asset to family.

Health & Life Expectancy

Bichons normally live upto the age of 15 to 20 years with an average life span of 16.5 or so. The Bichon Frise should not be given over two meals a day, and overfeeding should be avoided at all costs. It should be given proper nutritious food. The dog should also be given a bath frequently to keep it disease free. The Bichon Frise is susceptible to ailments like bladder stones, cataracts, hip displasia, and varied other airborne diseases. Hence it is advisable to take the dog on check-ups with the vet regularly.
