The Black and Tan Coonhound is a mixture of Black and Tan Virginia Foxhound and Bloodhound. It is primarily used for trailing and tracking. This large scent hound is well noted for its courage and proficiency for hunting deer, cougar, bear and other relatively big game.
Physical Appearance
Generally, the Black and Tan Coonhound measures 23 -27 inches in height and 65 -130 lbs in weight. Unlike other hounds, the Black and Tan Coonhound is quite larger, heavier and faster. The standard characteristic of the Black and Tan Coonhound has hazel brown eyes and wide, long and extremely thin ears that is hanging down on the neck. They also have a wide, black nose and a long, straight tail.
The black and tan color of the fur is somewhat similar to the Doberman and the Rottweiler but you can easily distinguish them among breeds because of their hanging ears, loud bark and their long tail.
Grooming
Like most of the scent hounds, the Black and Tan Coonhound does not have a flamboyant fur that is suitable for fashion shows. Its hide can become silky and shiny with occasional brushing. Because this breed has a tendency to develop ear infections, frequent cleaning is necessary.
