Fascinating Facts

The Boston terrier’s breeding history was well documented, unlike some dog breeds. The Boston terrier originated from Boston, Massachusetts. This breed was developed and downsized using Bulldog and English terrier. The resulting breed was later crossed with another smaller breed. The first product of this attempt to downsize the dog was the basis of today’s breed of Boston terrier.

Physical Appearance

The Boston terrier’s fully-grown size and weight is around 15 – 17 inches and 10 – 25 pounds. This breed is a small and dense dog. The head and its short muzzle are proportional with the rest of the body. Its neck looks slightly domed. You will notice that the body gives a square-ish appearance. The eyes of a Boston terrier are large and black. The ears are standing high on both sides of the head.

The short and muscular legs, especially the hind ones are set wide apart from each other. The tail is short and is normally left alone and never docked. The Boston terrier’s coat is short and smooth and usually comes in brindle, black and white, seal and on some occasions, brown and white.

 

 

Grooming

Grooming a Boston terrier is easy; all it takes is regular wiping of wet chamois or running of rubber gloves in order to maintain its naturally smooth and glossy coat. Bathe only if necessary.

Mood

The Boston terrier is active, affectionate, alert and intelligent. This breed likes to explore new things together with its master. It is also playful and likes to be in the center of attraction. It likes to engage itself on family activities.

This dog can become uncontrollable if it is not properly trained. Because of its small size, this dog is very prone to Small Dog Syndrome and Separation Anxiety. It may exhibit destructive and unproductive behaviors like obsessive barking, biting furniture, fighting other dogs or animals and even biting its own master.

With Children

The Boston terrier is a suitable playmate for children who are responsible enough to play with it. This breed is very energetic and affectionate and surely kids would never be bored with it. Make sure that you warn your kids not to employ harsh and rough treatment to the dog or else it would bark loudly or even worse, bite them.

Training & Exercise

This breed has lots of energy stored on its body and only daily exercise would make it happy. This breed would do well in an apartment or in a fenced yard. If you are taking this dog out for a walk, always be on the lead or else, the dog would think that it is the pack leader and not you.

You will not encounter so much trouble when it comes to training the Boston terrier because this breed is very intelligent and easy to train. It responds well to gentle and calm training methods and food-reward challenges. Harsh and tough training techniques would only make this breed mindful, independent and stubborn.

Health & Life Expectancy

The Boston terrier lives a normal lifespan of 12 – 15 years depending on how well it is taken care of. The large eyes of the Boston terrier are very susceptible to infections and injuries. This breed is very likely to develop skin tumors, heart problems and brain damage caused by abnormal growth of the skull. This dog is also sensitive to very hot and cold temperatures.
