Fascinating Facts

The Brittany was developed in the province of Brittany in France in 1800’s for bird hunting. The breeds used for mixing was the English setters and the French small land spaniels. Although the Brittany is considered as a Spaniel, its working characteristics are very similar to a setter or a pointer. This breed is also known as the Brittany Pointer, American Brittany, Brittany spaniel, Brittany Wiegref and Epagneul Bretton.

The Brittany was first introduced to Mexico and recognized by AKC in 1925. The breed met a little difficulty in recognition because American hunters want their pointers to have tails; the Brittany has very short tail.

Physical Appearance

The normal height and weight of the Brittany is 17 – 20 inches and 36 – 43 pounds respectively. The coat of the Brittany can come with different kinds of color combination. The liver and white or orange and white are the most common coat color of the Brittany. Other color combination includes liver roan and orange roan. There are times that a Brittany exhibits tri-color of white, orange and liver. Some Brittanys are born with naturally long or short tail. Those who are born with long tail; they get 3 – 10 centimeters.

Grooming

The Brittanys require coat brushing once or twice a day. Regular removal of dead hair is also advisable in order to make its coat sleek and natural looking.

Mood

The Brittany is a sweet-natured dog breed that responds well to soft and gentle way of treatment. They could easily get offended to harsh and rough way of handling especially during training. There are times that they become a little bit uncontrollable and unpredictable especially if they did not get enough exercise. They could also exhibit destructive behaviors if they are feeling bored and under exercised.

With Children

The Brittany is very affectionate and playful when it comes to children. They are very active and they could run for hours without showing signs of being tired.

Training & Exercise

The Brittany is very easy to train; they respond well to gentle training methods. Food reward training yields best result because of their attitude of impressing their masters. 2 – 3 hours of exercise is strongly recommended for the Brittany so that it would not display destructive attitudes if they are under exercised.

Health & Life Expectancy

The normal life lifespan for the Brittany is between 12 – 14 years. Epilepsy and hip dysplasia is known to occur on this breed.
