Fascinating Facts

The Canaan dog can detect mines better than any mechanical device. Four-hundred Canaan dogs were trained and use to detect mines in the Middle East. They were continually utilized by dessert-dwelling groups in guarding their camps, and herding flocks. In the contemporary society they are mainly use to guide disabled individuals specifically children who are blind. The Canaan dog has a cunning ability to easily learn and master orders and tricks. However this breed is not only intelligent, they are highly sociable to people they are familiar with.

Physical Appearance

The average weight of a Canaan dog is 35-55, with a height ranging from 19-24 inches. They are medium built with upright ears. The tail curled in their back. Their eyes are almond-shaped which are slightly slanted. Their nose is in the shades of liver which depends on the coat color. This breed has a double coat; a harsh and lying flat overcoat and a soft undercoat. The coloration of their coat ranges from black to cream and shades of brown and red, with occasional color patches and white markings. 

 

 

Grooming

Brushing the Canaan dog once a week would keep them groom. Special care should be observed when they are shedding. The Canaan dog is a very clean breed without any odor, so grooming them daily is unnecessary.

Mood

The Canaan dog is very protective with their owners. They can be very aggressive and dominant towards other dogs. Thus they are best suited for authoritative owner who can communicate and discipline them well. They tend to become anxious around strangers and may continually bark if allowed by the owners.  This breed should be trained early- on, and continually stimulated by novel activities since they easily become bored with repetition. 
This breed is very effective as watchdogs or guard dogs, since they are very alert, agile and protective.  They are highly energetic which usually engage in physical activities.

With Children

Children should be supervised around a Canaan dog. This breed becomes anxious around children they are not familiar with. However with constant exposure, they become gradually sociable.

Training & Exercise

Mental and physical activities are necessary for this breed. They should be taken for daily walks, and joggings. The owner should lead the way in daily walks and jogs, to establish pack leadership. Canaan dog should be regularly engaged in strenuous games and exercises. They usually thrive in challenging training session.

Health & Life Expectancy

The life expectancy of Canaan dog is about 12-15 years. They are one of the healthiest breed. However they are not immune to hypothyroidism, progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), Cryptorchidism, hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, luxating patella, osteochondritis dissecans (OCD), and epilepsy.
