Fascinating Facts
The Curly Coated retriever was used primarily for retrieving and hunting upland birds and waterfowls in England since 18th century. This breed is considered as one of the oldest breed of retriever which origins still remain rather murky. It is believed that the Curly Coated retriever was developed by crossing Irish Water spaniel, Newfoundland and the Old English water dog. These breeds made a fine breed of water retriever and were later mixed to a Poodle to develop a fine Curly Water dog.
The Curly Coated retriever became the most famous dog breed in England in 1800 because of its top retrieving skills. Aside from its unparalleled instincts, it was kept as a pet for being trustworthy. Later, this breed was exported to New Zealand and Australia where it still enjoys positive public reception. However, when the Curly Coated retriever was exported in America in 1907, it never got the expected reception from the public. It was only recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1924; 17 years after it was first introduced to the American breeders.
Physical Appearance
The standard height and weight of the Curly Coated retriever is 23 – 27 inches and 65 – 85 pounds respectively. The weight should directly correspond to its height. Its body is longer than its body. Its head is long rather than being wide. The color of the nose matches the color of the coat – black nose for black coat and brown nose for liver colored coat. Its short tail is covered with thick and curly hair.
The Curly Coated retriever has deep and not too wide chest. The thick coat covers its whole body. Every part of its body has curly hair except on the face, forelegs and under the feet.
Grooming
The tight curls of the Curly Coated retriever are very easy to groom. After bathing, you can let its curly coat to simply dry. Do not comb or brush its coat especially after bathing because the coat would become straight and scattered. Occasional cutting can also be done to make its coat more easy to manage.

This breed needs daily exercise. Aside from walking or running, the Curly Coated retriever needs to experience swimming and retrieving exercise in order to retain its retrieving instincts despite being kept as a household pet.
Health & Life Expectancy
You can expect your Curly Coated retriever to live 8 – 12 years. This breed is susceptible to eye problems, hip dysplasia and epilepsy. There are cases wherein bloat was seen.
