Back in old times it is common to witness bulldogs savagely attacking and suffocating bulls. This is where the term “bull” has been derived. Dog lovers intervene to save this breed through eliminating their aggression. Their endeavor has indeed succeeded, producing a breed that possesses the features of the old bulldogs, with a gentle and gregarious nature. The modern bulldogs were shorter. Physical Appearance

Bulldogs are distinctly known for its frowning look accentuated by excessive folds of skin on their brows and their foreheads. They have broad chest and short legs.   Bulldogs have dark and deep-seated eyes. The coloration of the coat ranges from white, pale yellow, fallow, piebald, washed-out red or combination of any of these colors. They have a curled and short tail. An average bulldog weighs 53-55 pounds, with 12-16 inches height.

 

 

Grooming

The folds of their skin should be wiped with a damp cloth daily to avoid infections from moisture accumulation. They should be combed with bristle brush. Bulldogs are easy to to groom since they have smooth and short-haired coat.

Mood

Bulldogs are gentle and protective to its owners. They seek human companion and reassurance that they are well loved. Children are generally safe around them. They had been named as one of the gentlest breed. However at times they could be stubborn and persistent if they not properly trained. Owner should possess leadership ability that clearly defines Bulldogs as a follower in the pack. At all times the owner should be perceived as the leader of the pack, since they could develop dominating attitude.

This breed enjoys being indoors. Aside from snoring loudly, they are also messy-eaters. They are mostly passive which makes them suitable for laid-back owners who enjoy being at home.

With Children

Bulldogs are generally protective around children. They are excellent watch dogs for young ones’ since they have a very strong guarding nature. Their gentle and laid back manner makes them a good company for children.

Training & Exercise

Though Bulldogs does not possess stamina for strenuous physical activities, they still need daily walk. They could be easily obese with the absence of exercise. The owner should lead the way in the walk to establish leadership in the pack.

Health & Life Expectancy

Bulldogs have an average life-expectancy of 8 years. Studies found that bulldogs are mostly affected by hip dyslexia. They are prone to develop cyst in-between their toes, commonly known as “Interdigital cyst”. Bulldogs have very low heat tolerance, thus it would be advisable that they are not exposed to extreme heat or sun exposure. During summer season provide them with a lot of drinking water.
