Fascinating Facts
The English setter is also known as Laverack setter; a name from its English developer Sir Edward Laverack. The setters are famous for their hunting behavior – they would crouch down after they caught their prey allowing the human hunter to throw a net on it.
Physical Appearance
The English setter is a long and lean type of hunting dog. Their average height and weight is 24 – 27 inches and 55 – 80 pounds respectively. They have an oval shaped head, long and square muzzle, black or brown nose with wide nostrils. The hazel eyes are large, and the chest is deep and round but not too wide. The tail tapers to a point starting from a very wide bottom.
The coat’s texture is wavy, silky and flat. The color of the coat includes white with blue, lemon and orange and brown with different markings. There are some English Cocker spaniel that exhibits tri-color coat (blue, brown and white).
Grooming
The English Cocker spaniel requires regular brushing of its silky, wavy and flat coat. Regular removal of dead hair, checking for tangled hair and checking for ticks or burrs is also important. The owner/trainer/handler can choose to trim the hair on the Cocker’s feet, tail and chest.
Mood
The English Cocker spaniel is a calm, gentle and easy going dog. With proper training, this dog can become confident, proud and protective. There are times that an English Cocker spaniel can become destructive and stubborn if they did not get enough exercise.
This breed is very inactive indoors but they are lively, cheerful and active outdoors. They get along well with other animals inside the house especially with cats. They are also very good jumpers that’s why they should be kept inside a properly fenced yard. They are very good watchdogs; they could be trusted in watching over your house.
With Children

Training & Exercise
Training an English Cocker spaniel is not difficult; all it takes is firm and gentle way of handling them. They do not respond positively to harsh and rough way of training and it would certainly bite if it experienced harsh discipline. They should also be given daily exercise. Long brisk walk in a wide and open space would make its day.
Health & Life Expectancy
The English Cocker spaniel can live from 10 – 12 years depending on how well they are taken care of. This breed is highly susceptible to hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, deafness and hypothyroidism. The female Cockers are prone to false pregnancies so be sure to take note of its mating period.
