Fascinating Facts

The English springer spaniel is considered as the predecessor of all the spaniel breeds. Before guns were invented, the English springer spaniel was one of the trusted companions of British hunters. During 1800’s, the Duke of Norfolk carefully bred springers with certain distinct characteristics; something that would differentiate cockers from springers. In 1902, the English Kennel Club declared that the springers and the cockers were considered as separate breeds.

Physical Appearance

The English springer spaniel measures about 19 – 21 inches and weighs about 45 – 55 pounds. Its head is very proportionate with its body; the skull is flat, medium and broad. The nose is absolutely dependent on the color of the coat – black nose for black coat and liver coat for brown nose. The eyes are medium sized; dark hazel eyes for white coated dogs and dark brown for black and white coated dogs. The ears are hanging down on both sides of the cheek and they are long enough to reach the nose.

In the United States, there are English Springer spaniels with docked tails however in some countries in Europe, docking is considered illegal. The coat color ranges from black and white, liver and white or white with live or black markings on it.  The coat has flat and wavy texture.

Grooming

Grooming the English springer spaniel is very easy; regular combing or brushing on its wavy and flat is all it takes to keep it neat and fabulous. The ears have more hair and it needs to be regularly checked for ticks and burrs as well.

Mood

The Springers are gentle, kind and friendly. They are very sociable that’s why they encounter little or no problems at all when it comes to other dogs or other animals inside the house of their master. They are willing to please and very obedient; a trait that the owner/trainer/handler should maximize.

The Springers are also sensitive to the tone of their master’s voice; harsh discipline or rough handling is therefore discouraged. They could become a little destructive if they did not get enough exercise. There are some Springer who get authoritative or dominant if they have a timid master. Proper character training should therefore be done during their puppyhood.

With Children

Because of their sweet and friendly nature, the Springer is suitable playmate for the children. They are always active and in motion. The kids would surely find the Springer a lovely companion and playmate.

Training & Exercise

The Springer is obedient in nature; training it should be easy and quick. They respond well to food-reward training and other gentle and kind training method. They are very energetic and therefore needs daily exercise otherwise they would become bored and bark excessively.

Daily long walks are what the Springer needs to be happy all throughout the day. Letting them run off leash every once in a while helps also keeps them healthy and fit.

Health & Life Expectancy

The English springer spaniel has a life expectancy of 12 – 14 years. This breed is known to be prone on hip dysplasia, blood disorders, progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) and even retinal dysplasia. There are also some genetic related diseases that should be watched out for. The phosphofructokinase deficiency can impair the cell’s ability to use carbohydrates. Professional advice from your trusted veterinarian should be sought before breeding the English springer spaniel.
