Fascinating Facts

The English Toy Spaniel is a combination of the King Charles Spaniel and Pugs, bred during the 17th century in the British Isles. This is the reason why this breed has a pushed back face and large, protruding eyes. It is sometimes called the present-day King Charles Spaniel. Mary, Queen of Scots, was the first to bring this breed to Scotland, making it popular among British Royalties and the upper class, even until this day. It became the English Toy Spaniel when brought to America.

Physical Appearance

The most distinguished characteristic of this toy breed is its pushed back nose and short muzzle. It has a large black nose plus there is an extra skin beneath its eyes. It also has a pair of long and hanging ears. The English Toy Spaniel has long-haired coat that is slightly curly. It can grow up to 10 inches tall and can weigh up to 12 pounds.

There are four types of English Toy Spaniel, namely: the red parti-colored Blenheim; the red solid-colored Ruby; the black and tan parti-colored Prince Charles, and; the black and tan solid-colored King Charles.

 

 

Grooming

Even if this dog has long hair, there is no need for stripping or trimming. They only need regular brushing.

Mood

The English Toy Spaniel is a quiet and gentle breed. It can interact freely with other dog breeds. Be wary dismissing its bad behavior, else it might develop the Small Dog Syndrome, wherein the dog is led to believe that it is the pack leader in the home. 

With Children

This type of toy dog is well-behaved around children. They are loving and gentle, although teaching children how to be pack leaders is important.

Training & Exercise

As with other dog breeds, the English Toy Spaniel needs his daily walk. Being small doesn’t mean it is alright to just make him run around the house. Although playing with the dogs gives him exercise, it will not be enough.

Health & Life Expectancy

This toy breed is prone to ear and eye infection, hence it is important to always keep these parts clean. Because this breed has a short muzzle, it has a tendency to breathe with difficulty, especially during the summer months. Health problems to watch out for include heart disease and respiratory problems. They can grow as old as 12 years.
