The industrial revolution drove merchants and craftsmen of England into France, taking their little companions with them. This “toy dog” has been famous in France, and they later became “French bulldog”. French bulldogs grace dog shows in England, even though British were unhappy with the name, since this breed has originated from England in1800’s.
Physical Appearance
French bulldog has distinct bat-like ears, and miniaturized physique. They have solid bone structure, snub nose, and naturally short tail. Unlike the English bulldog their coat is smooth. The color of the coat includes fawn or brindle accompanied by variety of marking patterns. An average French bulldog weighs 20-28 pounds.
Grooming
French bulldog should be combed and brush regularly to avoid matting. Their ears could be easily susceptible for infections. Check them regularly. It is fairly easy to keep this breed in top condition since they have smooth coat.
Mood
This breed has a sweet and clown-like personality. They strongly bond with their primary caregiver. Generally they are sociable and affectionate towards their owners. They possess a need for constant human companion. However they may become aggressive, stubborn, and anxious if they are extremely spoiled or catered. The owner should be firm yet caring in training this breed. French bulldog should be socialized at an early age to develop their playful and gentle personality around people.They are excellent companions for elders, families and people who are single. They suit well for apartment dwellers, since they prefer being indoors and they seldom bark.
With Children
French bulldog engages in rough plays with children. Supervision is still required even though this breed is generally gentle towards children. Their true weight might be disguise by their miniature physique, and children might attempt to pick them up.
Training & Exercise
This breed should be taken on daily walks. During summer seasons they should not be engage in strenuous activities outdoor. They have a vey low heat tolerance so they must not be expose to prolong period of heat.
Health & Life Expectancy
French bulldog has an average life expectancy of 10-12 years. They cannot endure being outdoors for a long period of time since their breathing system cannot regulate the temperature easily. They are susceptible to spinal disorders, heart defect and eye problem. The female French bulldog delivers puppies through caesarian section since their pups have large heads. Even though French bulldog is one of the healthiest bull breeds they could still developed various problems such difficulty in breathing due to obesity. They should be fed accordingly.
