The Havana Silk Dog was popular in the early 17th to 20th centuries in Europe. The breed however, originated in Cuba and became instinct after World War II. The breeders were able to develop this type of dog that resembled the original Havana Silk dog through sculptures, written images, and old paintings from the old era. Bloodstock foundation is from Cuba, Europe, and US.

Physical Appearance

The height of a Havana Silk Dog ranges from 9” – 11” and weight goes from 8 to 13 pounds. It has little built with straight legs, long neck and dark eyes with more refined snout. Its coat is soft, flat, slightly wavy and very silky. The Havana Silk dog comes in many colors but the nose pigment is black.

 

 

Grooming

Being very sociable, the Havana Silk dogs require personal attention from their owner. They must be given proper nutrition and a safe and cozy place to exercise and sleep. They must be taken to the vet regularly. In order to keep the coat in full length, combing must be done 1 to 3 times per week and bathing every 1-2 weeks.

Mood

The Havana Silk dogs love to be with their family all the time. They are very energetic, active and obedient. They are good in some sports. They have the tendency to herd puppies, chickens, and even children. They are fun-loving and they can easily adapt to any environment.

With Children

These adorable dogs have social needs so they are always around people. They are happy when they are together with their owner. They love children but since they are small and can easily get injured, they should not be left alone with very young kids. Havana Silk dogs are not good for families with toddlers as the dogs might be stepped on.

Training & Exercise

This type of dogs need ample energy and must engage in regular exercise. Most of them enjoy swimming and jumping. Even at year 14 or older, some Havana Silk dogs are still active and still enjoy outing. They can be trained easily. They respond with interest to any training exercises. Unlike any other dogs, due to the origin of the Havana Silk dogs, they rarely get cataracts, elbow dysplasia, liver problems, cardiac diseases and deafness. But they still get usual conditions like skin problems, kidney issues and even seizures if they are not pampered and taken care of.
