Irish Wolfhounds are one of the tallest dog breeds in the world. Originating from Ireland, this large dog is also known as the “gentle giant”. They are sight hounds which means they primarily use their sense of sight rather than their sense of smell to hunt prey.

As the name wolfhound suggests, their purpose is to hunt wolves. Their huge size and speed make them ideal for hunting wolves and other smaller prey. Sadly, the pure breeds are now extinct in Ireland and current Wolfhounds are a result of rebreeding of Irish Wolfhounds with the Deerhound, Great Dane and Borzoi. Today’s Wolfhounds still look similar to the pure breed but with some slight physical differences.

Physical Appearance

The Irish Wolfhound is on average the tallest among dog breeds measuring up to 36 inches in height and weighing up to 154 lbs. They have an athletic build but move with agility and elegance. They have a slightly elongated head and medium-sized muzzle with broad, muscular shoulders. It has a small black nose, sweet dark eyes and tiny ears that stand erect. Its hair is rough, shaggy and long throughout its body particularly under the chin and eyes. They are available in colors of white, grey, black and red.

Grooming

Grooming Irish wolfhounds is moderately hard. Their coat is long, rough, hard and easily dirtied which needs to be groomed regularly. Professional grooming is usually required as this can be quite tedious.

Mood

Irish Wolfhounds have are kind-tempered and are not easily provoked. Although they are very loyal to their owners they tend to be too friendly even to strangers which does not make them good guard dogs. It is usually their big size that frightens trespassers. However, they become ferocious whenever hey perceive real threats. This breed needs much attention and can become rowdy and destructive if unattended to.

With Children

Irish Wolfhounds are a kind, affectionate and patient breed which makes them great with children. They are harmless and can play with children. However, their big size usually intimidates smaller children. Otherwise, they are gentle and sweet.

Training & Exercise

Training Irish Wolfhounds is usually uncomplicated. They are eager to learn and respond best to gentle but assertive commands. This breed is naturally athletic which is why regular exercise is needed to keep them healthy. A huge lawn where they can run around in is recommended.

Health & Life Expectancy

Gastric torsion or bloatedness is common in this breed because of the shape of their chest. However, dilated cardiomyopathy and bone cancer are the most common causes of mortality. Life span can reach up to 10 years.
