Fascinating Facts
Jack Russell Terriers are named after Reverend John Russell who first produced this breed over 200 years ago. Jack Russell Terriers can be traced back to English White Terriers which are now extinct. This breed underwent many changes over the decades to conform to show standards. A fun fact to know is that a Jack Russell Terrier played the role of Milo in the movie “The Mask” starring Jim Carrey.
Physical Appearance
Jack Russell Terriers are primarily hunters which explain its muscular and robust physique. Its body length and height are proportional giving a balanced look. Its coat is black, white, or tan with markings. Its legs are straight and long with good muscle tone. It has a flat skull with an average muzzle, a strong jaw with well-developed cheeks. Overall, this breed is athletic in appearance.
Grooming
Grooming is easy since regular brushing of their coats will suffice. Bathing is not necessary unless the dog gets dirty. Jack Russell Terrier show dogs need to be hand stripped of their coat to emphasize this breed’s magnificent physique.
Mood
Jack Russell Terriers are fun-loving and lively dogs. They are very determined and easy to train. However, owners or trainers must exert dominance over this breed because they tend to be pack leaders. They must be trained to follow rules at an earlier age so that they know their limitations. They have exceptional hunting skills and enjoy chasing and exploring outdoors. Jack Russell Terriers should not be left with other small animals since they are hunters and may mistake them for prey.
With Children
Jack Russell Terriers are highly intelligent and enjoy playing with toys and games. They are very friendly towards children which make them excellent playmates. However, children must be taught not to taunt this dog because they can become aggressive when provoked.
Training & Exercise
Jack Russell Terriers need to be allowed to exercise everyday. They enjoy jogging, brisk walks and games. They are also able to jump over fences better than other terrier breeds. If not exercised, this breed can become agitated and restless. It is not recommended that they live in enclosed homes like condominiums since they need to be able to dig and run around. Jack Russell Terriers must also be properly trained to obey rules and authority or they will over power you. It is particularly hard to train them because of their will to dominate and lead which makes this breed unsuitable for inexperienced owners.
Health & Life Expectancy
Although rare, some Jack Russell Terriers are at risk for knee dislocations and eye problems. Ectopia lentis is the common eye problem encountered in this breed. Otherwise, this dog is known for being generally healthy with a long life span.
