Fascinating Facts

The Japanese Chin or Japanese Spaniel was originally developed for the purpose of companionship. This breed came from China and was developed in Japan and later exported and introduced to Europe. This breed was considered as semi deity by the Japanese and only the members of the royal family are allowed to have one. This breed was a gift to foreign diplomats and to the royal family of other kingdom or country.

Physical Appearance

The Japanese Chin stands 7 – 11 inches and weighs about 4 pounds. This breed has large head with broad muzzle and wide bright eyes. The V-shaped ears are covered with considerable amount of hair and are set apart from each other. The nose is black for black and white coated dogs and with wide nostrils. For other Japanese Chin with other colors, the nose matches the color of the coat.

The length and height of the Japanese Chin are about the same. The feathery tail is standing high and sometimes bends close to the body. The coat is straight, thick and smooth. The coat color is only white with patches of any possible color.

Grooming

When it comes to grooming the Japanese Chin, regular and delicate brushing of the smooth, straight and fine coat is needed. Unlike other dogs which take short time to groom, the Japanese Chin’s coat takes 10 – 15 minutes to become on top condition. Usually, the combing is just to make sure that there are no tangled hairs.

Mood

The Japanese Chin is a lively, happy and intelligent breed. This dog is very loyal to its master. This dog is kind and sweet to anyone that it recognizes but can become a little distant to strangers. This reserved attitude can be remedied by socializing the dog to other animals and people as well. Socialization can be as early as puppyhood.

This dog likes to gather attention; in fact this breed likes to please its master. Although this dog likes to have fun, it is quite sensitive to the mood and tone of its master. When in bad mood, it would act independently no matter how its master tries to appease it.

With Children

The Japanese Chin is sweet and gentle dog. This breed is perfect for children looking for playmate and companion. This breed could run for long stretches of time without getting tired.

Training & Exercise

When it comes to training, the Japanese Chin responds only to gentle and calm-mannered instructions. Whenever it sensed that the owner/trainer/handler uses harsh or rough training discipline, it would turn its back on you and act on its own. Food reward training would greatly improve its focus during the training sessions.

This breed is so small and fluffy and many trainers/owners/handlers like to carry them around while traveling. Exercise is a vital part of this breed’s development and growth and carrying them would only induce Small Dog Syndrome.

Health & Life Expectancy

The Japanese Chin’s lifespan is about 10 years. This breed lives generally healthy for the rest of its natural life but can also be prone to respiratory problems and eye problems. This breed can become a little uncomfortable and foul tempered with hot weather.
