Fascinating Facts
The Kuvasz came from Hungary where it was developed into a breed that we recognize today. However, it first came from Tibet since the time of the Huns. The Turks used to describe this dog as the “sheep dog” that protects their flock and properties. The Kuvasz came from Turkish word “protector”.
Physical Appearance
The Kuvasz’s fully-grown height and weight is 28 – 30 inches and 100 – 115 pounds respectively. The body looks longer than tall. The head and its muzzle are proportional to the size of the body. The lips and the nose with wide nostrils are black in color. The V-shaped ears are rounded on the tip and are hanging on both sides of the head. The eyes are almond-shaped and dark-brown in color.
The naturally long tail is hanging down reaching its hocks. The coat of the Kuvasz is medium-length and the coat colors come with ivory or white. The texture of the coat is smooth and straight and sometimes wavy coat also comes along. You will notice that the skin of the Kuvasz is pigmented.
Grooming
The Kuvasz should always be brushed to keep its medium-length coat in top condition. The coat is naturally dirt and water resistant and bathing it would dull its natural properties. There are owners/handlers/trainers that use talcum powder before and after brushing to clean the coat of the Kuvasz.
Mood
The Kuvasz is a highly territorial dog because of it is mainly a livestock guard dog and therefore not a dog for every family. This dog tends to assert very dominant behavior over other pets in the house that’s why it needs firm and strong but calm and gentle discipline. Starting from its puppyhood, train this dog to be close with humans especially with children. However, the Kuvasz is a very devoted pet once it gets to know its family or pack.
With Children
The Kuvasz should be trained to live with children so that it would be thoroughly familiarized with them. The Kuvasz is very protective and loyal with children as long as it sees the children as its pack leader.
Training & Exercise
The Kuvasz is a highly independent dog breed that is not easy to engage to obedience training. This breed is also sensitive to the tone of its master’s voice. Make sure that you use only gentle and calm voice to motivate it. It would surely turn its back on you once it got reprimanded. To help you improve its focus, always give it food reward whether or not it performed well.
Health & Life Expectancy
The Kuvasz can usually live from 10 – 12 years depending on how well it is taken care of. This breed is very susceptible to inflammation of the shoulders making it lame. This illness is commonly known as osteochondritis dissecans. Other illnesses that should be expected are hip dysplasia, skin problems and allergies.
