Fascinating Facts

The Labrador retriever was developed and originated in Newfoundland in order to help fisherman catch fish by helping them pull the net by jumping into ice-cold waters. There was a time that the Labradors were called St John’s Dogs. This breed is one of the most popular dog breeds in the United States.

In 1800’s, this breed was brought to England from Labrador and was used to improve the hunting skills and instincts of the other dogs by crossing the Labrador’s with them. This breed is good not only in hunting and tracking but in narcotics detection as well. In fact, many anti-drug agencies all over the world are employing Labrador retrievers in their anti-drug campaign.

Physical Appearance

The standard height and weight of a fully-grown Labrador retriever is 22 – 24 inches and 60 – 75 pounds respectively. There are some instances that a 100-pound weight is reached. The size of the body looks longer than taller.

There are two types of Labradors – the American and the English Labrador. The English Labrador is heavier and stockier while the American Labrador is tall and gangly. The size of the head is broad and the nose is thick. The neck is apparent even from a distance. The color of the nose depends on the color of the coat; black for the black and yellow ones and brown nose for brown coated ones. Just like the nose, the color of the eyes is dependent on the color of the color of the coat.

The coat is rough and short and water resistant. The color of the coat ranges from solid black, brown, yellow and even silver.

Grooming

Regular brushing is what it takes to properly groom a Labrador retriever. Bathe only when necessary. In order to make the coat shiny, run it with wet chamois or rubber gloves.

Mood

The temperament of a Labrador retriever is generally a positive one. They are patient, fun loving, sweet-tempered, intelligent and willing to please. One of their favorite hobbies is swimming. This active dog loves to explore and retrieve. Once they are out in the field they become reliable and competent companions.

Just like other dogs, the Labrador can become foul-tempered and destructive if they did not get enough exercise for the day. Adult Labradors are extremely strong that’s why they should be trained on leash as early as their puppy hood.

With Children

The Labradors are sweet-tempered and active dogs. They could run and play almost endlessly with children. They are also excellent guard dogs especially if strangers are snooping around.

Training & Exercise

The Labrador retrievers are naturally intelligent; training them with almost anything would be easy. As long as the trainer/owner/handler uses fun, lively and gentle training techniques, you will never be disappointed them. Food-reward training methods are also highly recommended in order to motivate the Labradors more.

To keep the Labrador healthy and fit, exercise is a vital part of their development that they should not miss. 2 – 3 hours of daily walking or jogging should be monitored in order to keep them from getting bored.

Health & Life Expectancy

The normal life expectancy of the Labrador retriever is between 10 – 12 years. There are some instances that they exceed to 14 years. The Labradors live generally healthy but there are some diseases to watch out for like eye disorders such as PRA, hip dysplasia and ear infections.
