Fascinating Facts
The Norfolk terrier was a fashion statement in England’s Cambridge University where students usually kept them as pets in their dorm rooms. They were later called Trumpington terriers after the street where they were widely bred and developed.
Physical Appearance
The Norfolk terrier is a short, sturdy dog with a build that allows them to be springy and agile. Their small ears hang very near their heads. The average height is usually 10-12 inches and weighs about 11 pounds. They have short tails that measure 1 ½ to 2 inches long. Their colors could range from red, tan, black and tan.
Grooming
The Norfolk terrier’s coat needs stripping at certain seasons, and can be washed when they become dirty. Keep in mind that clipping might ruin the coat’s texture and this should be kept at a minimum if necessary.
Mood
Norfolk terriers are sweet and intelligent, and their playful and eager-to-please disposition makes them perfect for almost anybody and their families. They are easy to train and will be perfectly obedient little dogs in no time. They can get easily bored, however, and they tend to dig and bite when they are. Providing chewing toys and play things for this breed will do to counter this down side and make them sufficiently involved with an activity if they are not outside playing.
With Children
The Norfolk terrier is perfect for almost any family, and will get along with children very well. They want to see their owners happy and will do almost anything to see that you are pleased. This breed’s happy disposition is contagious, and will no doubt cheer up any child.
Training & Exercise
Training should be very easy when it comes to this intelligent, eager to please dog. Reward and firm but gentle training will get a Norfolk terrier trained in a short time.
The Norfolk terrier is a very energetic breed and they need moderate exercise to keep their boredom at bay. They need activity when they are not exercising and will love small toys to keep busy with when they’re not running in the park or playing in the yard.
Health & Life Expectancy
The life span of a Norfolk terrier is about 12-15 years. This is a generally healthy breed, but is more susceptible to incorrect bites; characterized by misalignment of their teeth. They are also susceptible with hip dysplasia, but a responsible breeder will make sure that the dog’s lineage does not have this genetic disposition. They are also prone to having knee problems. A good background check on the dog that you’re getting should make sure that your Norfolk terrier is happy and healthy.
