Fascinating Facts
The Norwich terrier is one of the smallest terriers in the market. They would make great pets for people who have small homes or would like a dog that they could bring around under their arm. They are adventurous and might run off, so make sure your pet is secure when you bring them out with you to make sure that accidents won’t happen.
Physical Appearance
The Norwich terrier measures about 9-10 inches in height and weigh 10-12 lbs. in weight. They are small, cute dogs with ears that prick up and, like many terriers, have a double coat that come in shades of red, tan, brown, black and wheaten.
Grooming
Grooming for the Norwich terrier, being a small dog, should not be hard but should be kept in check periodically. They are have two coats; a hard, wiry coat that covers the top and a down, soft undercoat. They need regular combing with a steel brush or comb to make sure the old hair is pulled away from them to keep their coat from matting. Stripping will keep the original coat’s appearance, and is recommended at autumn and in spring.
Mood
The Norwich terrier is a very emotionally balanced dog, bounding with confidence and playfulness without possibility of agitation and quarrelsomeness. They are very easy to train with a constant flow of commands that they need to follow and gratification such as treats if they do good. Because they are highly energetic, they might get easily bored, and will bark and dig if they are left without activity. Some things to chase such as balls, sticks, small bones and other toys should keep this energetic pet sufficiently amused when everyone is out of the house or have to be left for long periods of time.
With Children
The Norwich terrier should be a perfect companion for any kid, as they can play and run at lengthy bursts. If your children have other pets such as rabbits, gerbils and other small animals, they should be kept away from this dog, as their adventurous nature and playfulness might prove to be rough play for these little animals.
Training & Exercise
The Norwich terrier has a lot of energy to spend, and should be able to endure long periods of training and exercise. They are very intelligent, obedient dogs and should be easy to train. They are very playful and need exercise to drain their energy.
Health & Life Expectancy
There are no listed major or minor health concerns for the Norwich terrier, but their owners should take great care choosing their breed line, as they might have heart defects such as cardiomyopathy. They are also prone to knee problems if their lineage has that defect.
