Yarmouth Toller, Tolling Retriever, Little River Duck Dog and Little Red Duck Dog are just few of the famous names synonymous to the Nova Scotia Duck-Tolling retriever. This breed is also called Toller, Novie or Scotty. This breed was called Toller because of its way of luring out waterfowls in the water making the hunters who are hiding in a safe distance to shoot the game.

Physical Appearance

The Nova Scotia Duck-Tolling retriever measures 17 – 21 inches in height and 37 – 51 pounds in weight. This breed is a medium sized muscular dog. The head is wedge shaped. Its body is well adapted for swimming because of its deep chest. It has also thick and long fur that enables the Novie endure cold temperature especially after swimming.

 

 

Grooming

The thick and harsh coat of the Novie is water resistant and it needs to be regularly combed or brushed in order to maintain top condition. Upon grooming the Novie, pay attention to the undercoat because it tends to shed especially during hot weather seasons.

Mood

The Novie is a loyal and responsible pet and companion. This breed is naturally intelligent, affectionate and obedient to its master.  The Novie still have its tolling instincts; in fact, it can be shown through its being playful and consistent showing its desire to retrieve every once in a while.

However this breed can be a bit reserved and distant with strangers. In order to prevent this kind of attitude, make sure that you let this dog socialize with other people other than yourself and your family so that it would know how to react with unfamiliar people.

With Children

The Novie is a friendly and affectionate dog that would surely become your children’s favorite pet and playmate. Make sure that small children are supervised whenever they are playing with the Novie because it might bite them if the children used harsh and tough treatment to the dog.

Training & Exercise

The Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers have strong and high energy and very active whether indoors and outdoors. It needs to have daily walk or run in order to make it happy and satisfied. An hour or two hours of exercise would be enough to keep the Novie satisfied.

Training the Novie would be easy because this breed is very intelligent. It likes to learn new things together with its master. Bear in mind that the Novie is quite sensitive to the tone of your voice and harsh and tough training techniques would only make it independent and mindful. Whenever you feel that the Novie is distracted, you can use food reward to improve its focus.

Health & Life Expectancy

The normal life expectancy of the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever is about 12 – 14 years. This breed has few health problems to keep an eye with; thyroid problems, progressive retinal atrophy and autoimmune problems.
