In the past, the Old English sheepdog is mainly used to herd cattle and sheep in England. They were first exhibited at a show in Birmingham, England. As the years progress they have become a staple candidates in dog shows. Their fluffy coat and sociable manner has made them one of the most alluring breeds.

Theories emerge to pin the origin of this breed. Some says that Old English sheepdog is related to Poodle and Deerhound, while other contends that they are from the Briard and the Bergamasco, or from Scotch Bearded Collies and the Russian Owtcha. However no definite evidence has shown its exact origin until now. It has been recorded that Old English sheepdog has been elaborately groomed as early as 1907. In 1880’s they been exported to the U.S., where they had been popularly own by five out of ten most wealthiest American families.

Until now their charm did not cease to captivate the heart of dog lovers around the world. They had been famously featured in paint commercial and movies.

Physical Appearance

The most distinct characteristic of an Old English sheepdog is their fluffy, thick, shaggy, and long coat. Their ears lay flat on top of their head while they’re face and eyes are covered with fur. They are physically well-built, with broad and deep chest. They are either tailless or their tales has been amputated. The coloration of their coat range from shades of gray, grizzle, blue, blue gray, blue merle, gray, with occasional white or gray patching. They have water resistant undercoat. An Old English sheepdog weighs 65 pounds and can grow until 100 pounds. Their height ranges from 22-24 inches.

Grooming

Keeping an Old English sheepdog in top condition requires extensive work and patience. They would be good for owners who are meticulous in cleaning. The long and fluffy coat should be combed and brushed three times a week, which usually takes two-three hours. Since their coat is an attractive breeding ground for various kinds of parasites. Owners usually cut the dog’s coat in a preferred length using professional shears. An Old English sheepdog should be trained early-on, so they would become comfortable with the grooming process.

Mood

An English sheepdog has a very sociable nature. They have a strong herding instinct which is mainly manifested though bumping people. They have no aggressive intention and they are loyal, friendly and protective towards their owners. However they also require physical and mental stimulation since they easily become bored and anxious.

With Children

They are safe around children, since this breed is generally unaggressive. They consider the people around, as part of their flock. They tend to more protective than aggressive, though they may herd children by bumping them. With proper disciplined and training they could unlearn this behavior.

Training & Exercise

Though this type of breed may seem as a laid back dog, nevertheless they need to taken on daily walks and runs. They require physical and mental exercises and activities as well. It should be noted that the owner should lead the way in jogging or running to established leadership.

Health & Life Expectancy

The health expectancy of an English sheepdog is 10-12 years. This breed is prone to IMHA (Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia), hip dysplasia and cataracts. Cancer has been also known as a major cause of death among English sheepdogs. The hair that covers the eyes and face must not be abruptly trimmed since the adult dog might  become unaccustomed to sunlight. It should be trimmed early on to prevent eye damage.
