Fascinating Facts
The Pharaoh hound was originated from the ancient Egypt. It is considered as one of the oldest dog breeds in the world and has been living among humans since 4000 to 3000 BC. The Pharaoh hound was primarily used to hunt small games such as rabbit. They are the companions of the ancient Pharaohs and the Phoenicians brought them to the Mediterranean Islands of Gozo and Malta. They belong to both sight and scent hound; it has a remarkable sense of sight and sense of smell.
In 1974, the Maltan government declared the Pharaoh hound as their national dog. The people of Malta named the Pharaoh hound as Kelb tal-Fenek meaning “dog of the rabbit”. As a matter of fact, the Maltese coin has a Pharaoh hound engraved on its back. In the 1960’s, the Pharaoh hounds made its way to the United Kingdom and the United States.
Physical Appearance
The ideal height and weight for the Pharaoh hound is 23 – 25 inches and 45 – 55 pounds respectively. They are tall and slender dogs. Its body is quite longer than its tail. The head is chisel and wedge-shaped while the skull is flat. Their ears are large and erect; their small amber-colored eyes are oval shaped. You will notice that the nose is almost the same color as its coat.
The normal color of the Pharaoh hound’s coat is red and tan which is very glossy when cleaned properly. There are times that the Pharaoh hound exhibits small white markings on its coat. They have strong and straight legs. Its whip-like tail stands high.
Grooming
Because of its relatively short hair on its coat, the Pharaoh hounds require very little grooming. Aside from regular bath, brushing and removing of dead hair is all it takes to take care of its coat.
Mood
The Pharaoh hound is a well-behaved and intelligent dog. They are independent most of the time and they act according to what their senses tell them. Whenever they feel or sense freedom, it would surely run away from you and chase whatever is moving around them. They are also quiet that’s why they are very suitable for those people who looking for quiet pets.
The Pharaoh hounds have a unique trait – blushing whenever they feel excited. Their nose and their ears turn red or deep rose when they blush.
With Children
The Pharaoh hounds have a long stretch of temper especially for those children that engage the Pharaoh hound on rough plays. They are friendly and active playmates, especially if the game involves running. Although they are friendly, they can be a bit reserved and timid to strangers.
Training & Exercise
Training a Pharaoh hound is not difficult as long as the trainer or owner understand their needs and character. Food-reward training is highly recommended especially on the first few weeks of training. They can be easily distracted by fast moving objects. They should only be trained in a secured open space and far away from the busy street such as your own yard or the public park.
Giving the Pharaoh hound at least 2 -3 hours of exercise is enough to keep it healthy and fit. This way, you could prevent it from being destructive and dominant over its master.
Health & Life Expectancy
The Pharaoh hounds have a life expectancy of 11 – 14 years. They are very healthy and strong and there are only few of them that get sick. Sometimes, they are sensitive to insecticides and drugs.
