Fascinating Facts
Unlike most of the hounds in the United States, the Plott hound is the only breed without British ancestry. According to historical reports, a mixture of Bloodhounds and curs were the origin of this breed. The name Plott came from Jonathan Plott and his descendants when they have decided to preserve a dog breed that came from Germany. The Plott hounds are rarely kept as pets because of its strong hunting nature.
Physical Appearance
The Plott hounds grow for about 20 – 24 inches and weighs about 45 – 55 pounds. It is a powerful and medium-sized dog with moderately flat skull and quite intact skin. Its nose and lips are black while its eyes are either hazel or brown set in a black eye rims. It also has drooping ears and webbed feet. One may say that it have an eager, alert and intelligent expression on it.
This breed has dense, glossy and close coat. Although most of the time the Plott hounds have single coat, there are times that double coats occur. Their coat colors may vary from just shade of brindle, solid black, black with brindle and black saddle.
Grooming
The Plott hound does not need so much attention when it comes to grooming. Occasional combing and removing the dead hair is all it takes to maintain its glossy coat. After bathing, wipe with chamois or rubber gloves to bring out the natural shine of the coat.
Check the ears and the pads for ticks and fleas regularly. Also, check if there are any broken or dead nails.
Mood
The Plott hound is a sociable dog that can be a wonderful family pet and companion. They are active, dedicated and cheerful. Their hunting nature is still prominent because it will not hesitate to stand up against larger creatures.
This breed is a very effective watch dog; it will let out a loud bark if it sensed any unfamiliar scent or strangers around its territory. However, the Plott hounds are not effective guard dogs because they are very merry around the presence of humans.
With Children
Because of its active and happy character, the Plott hound could get along well with the kids making it an ideal playmate. It is very energetic and could run for an hour that’s why it needs to be placed in a secured area such as fenced yard. It could also escape if it sensed strong and attractive smell. The Plott hound should not be unleashed in public places to avoid having these scenarios.
Training & Exercise
The Plott hound is not suitable for small house and inactive families. It needs to have at least 2 -3 hours of exercise outdoors. You can make it your jogging companion with you leading its way and not the other way around.
Making a Plott hound do a trick is quite challenging. Although they possess intelligence and willingness to learn, they are so easily distracted by scent that they smell and do whatever it takes to find it. Food-reward training is always the best option for training a Plott hound. Also, the owner/trainer/handler should have a stronger and more decisive character than the Plott hound because if the dog sensed that you lack proper attitude of a leader, it will definitely not obey you.
Health & Life Expectancy
The Plott hounds live for about 10 – 14 years depending on how well you take care of it. This breed has a habit of rapidly consuming its food thus making it very susceptible to gastric torsion. Also, do not take your dog out on a long exercise immediately after eating its food. There are no illnesses reported on this breed that should worry its owner/trainer/handler.
