Fascinating Facts
The Polish Lowland breed has its origin at the lowlands of Poland during the 13th century when they were mostly involved in herding work. It is believed that this breed has its ancestors in the ancient, robust herding dogs from the Hungarian Plains. This breed was put to use during World War II after which it faced near extinction. The father of the PONS is a dog named Smoke who had a master in Dr. Hryniewicz, both of who are the sole reasons of the breed’s restoration after the war and their present existence in the world today.
Physical Appearance
The Pons are big, muscular and rugged looking dogs having a big domed head with heart shaped ears that drop to the sides. Generally having a height of 16 – 20 inches and weighing approximately 30 - 35 pounds they have a long and white top coat sporting other colours on it like black and grey, and have a dense and soft undercoat. The topcoat is never curly but is usually long and wavy and excess hair on the head makes it appear bigger and covers its eyes. Apart from the head, chin and legs also have a lot of excess hair.
Grooming
Thorough grooming is much required for the long and wiry topcoat of the Pons. Since the wavy locks get matted quickly, rigorous brushing is required at least once a week. The Pons are good for people having allergies since they shed very little hair.
Mood
The Pons are known to be steady and self sufficient dogs with excellent memories. They are slightly reserved with strangers but are otherwise highly adaptive, clever, alert, affectionate and a bit animated sometimes.
With Children
They are good with children if properly exercised, trained and socialized from a very early age. They are quite dependable and since they are highly alert and announce strangers who come near, keeping them with children are worthwhile. Best would be if they are raised with the children from the very beginning.
Training & Exercise
In training a Pon, remember that you need to be a firm yet calm master communicating with attitude and action who the real boss is. Otherwise very obedient and easily trainable, these strong minded dogs need to know that you are the master. Once learnt, they would try to please you to demand affection. Remember that Pons are serious dogs who can bite if irritated or provoked. Socializing from a very early age is a good idea to make the dog friendly and companionable.
Health & Life Expectancy
The Polish Lowland is a healthy and hardy breed without any major health concerns. It is always a good idea to take your dog for check ups to identify common issues such as hip dysplasia and eye problems. A low protein diets suits it the most.
