Fascinating Facts
The Rat Terrier got its name from being bred to do ratting, or hunting rats. Their size allows them to hunt high and low for rodents and is also used to hunt other small game such as hares. They are a very versatile breed and will make for great watch dogs as well.
Physical Appearance
There are two types of categories when it comes to Rat terriers and their size; miniature and standard. Miniature rat terriers stand 10 inches and never above, while the standard type would be 13 inches to 18 inches. They have tight, muscular bodies and ears that perk up, giving them the alert expression that rat terriers come with. Their coat colors can vary from chocolate, pearl, sable, red and white, tri-spotted black, tan or solid red. Those who breed them for work, however, does not pay much attention to their coat colors.
Grooming
The Rat terrier has a short and close-lying coat; something that not all terriers have in common as they usually have double-layered coats. Rat terriers should be easy to groom with minimum brushing and occasional bathing. The sheen in their coat comes from natural oils and should be preserved by refraining from washing them regularly.
Mood
The Rat terrier is alternately known as a “feist” and they have earned that nickname well! These are feisty, playful creatures that are as alert as they look and are constantly on the prowl for anything to chase or anything that could mean adventure. Their build allows them to be fast and jumpy, but they do not yap like the small dogs that they resemble. They are very affectionate and will love constant companionship.
With Children
The Rat Terrier, especially when raised from puppyhood, will make great companions and playmates for kids. They are very inquisitive; a trait that most children have, and they will find that their love of adventure and boundless energy is something that they have in common with these ideal, loveable pets.
Training & Exercise
The Rat terrier is very eager to please and pick up training much faster than most terriers. Much like other terriers, you will need to be dominating and keep a steady flow of commands that this breed will have to follow to avoid Small Dog Syndrome. They are very energetic and love to play a lot, so the usual walk and yard play should keep this dog and his energy levels satiated.
Health & Life Expectancy
The Rat terrier is a very healthy breed, and there isn’t much health problems associated with them. However, you should keep in mind that they like chasing after moving objects, and might encounter an accident while doing so, as injuries are prone to infection.
