Soft coated wheaten terrier originated in Ireland. In 1946 the wheaten were exported to United States. The wheaten terrier is known as the all around dog, from being a watchdog to a hunting dog. They are the farmer’s best friend. At present they join in competing in obedience, liveliness, and tracking.

Physical Appearance

The Softcoated Wheaten Terrier is a squarely proportioned animal. Most puppies have dark coat with colors white, red or brown. Wheaten puppies’ ears and muzzle maybe dark brown or black. As they grow their dark coat becomes wheaten color. The wheaten terrier is a medium- sized dog. They normally weigh 35-45 lbs and ranges from 17-20 inches tall.

It has triangularly shaped ears that are folded forward. Its large black nose is the most prominent facial feature. The eyes are almond-shaped, although it is usually hidden behind the thick fur on its face.

 

 

Grooming

Using a medium toothed comb is much more ideal in grooming a wheaten terrier. Regular combing will prevent tangles. It is recommended that combing the fur starts during early childhood so that the mane will not develop tangles that are not only hard to remove but also painful for the dog. Using a brush for their soft coat is not recommended because they will make the soft coat look fuzzy.

Because its eyes and ears are frequently hidden behind the fur, it is important that they be checked and cleaned regularly. Bathe or shampoo whenever it is needed. This type of dog is great even for those who suffer allergies because they shed fur very rarely.

Mood

The wheaten terrier is a strong, active and well-coordinated breed of dog. The soft wheaten terrier is very active and playful. They can get along well with cats, if introduced when they are still puppies. But if not this will be a problem. They greet visitors eagerly. Being alert makes them the great watchdogs. They get along well with children because they are friendly and playful. They are very intelligent and could learn easily. The trick should be firmness and straight forward attitude towards the dog.

With Children

They get along well with children because of their playfulness and activeness. They are very loving to children. But care and supervision by adults are recommended for safety reasons.

Training & Exercise

They need moderate exercise and daily walks are the only intended exercise for wheaten terriers. These breed of dogs should be trained while still young, although older dogs could also learn. They are very straightforward and should be handled in that manner.

Health & Life Expectancy

The soft coated wheaten terriers in general have a long life span of about 12-15 years. They are prone to various acquired diseases. They are also susceptible to protein wasting illnesses. They could also get flea allergies.
