Fascinating Facts

The Standard Schnauzer came from Germay and existing since 1492 and used during World War I as messenger dogs. Schnauzer came from the German word “Schnauze” which means muzzle. It is one of the three different sizes of Schnauzer, though they look almost the same. It is also the oldest and the original.

Physical Appearance

The Standard Schnauzer is just a medium-sized and smaller than the Giant Schnauzer. They have long and cute beard and eyebrows, the nose and lips are black, the eyes are dark brown. Their tails stands high 1-2 inches and when they are cropped, their ears form V-shape. They weigh about 30-45 lb and their height is 17-19 inches. Their colors are either pepper-and-salt or black.

Grooming

Owners must keep the ears clean, clip their nails and brush their coat. Standard Schnauzer’s beard and leg hair must be combed enough to avoid the mats. You must clip or strip its coat every 4-6 months. It is also important that you clean its whiskers after meal. Whatever your dogs’ breed, you must maintain their cleanliness.

Mood

The Standard Schnauzer is a playful and active dog. They should start socializing with other dogs when they are still young. Since Standard Schnauzer could be a protector or a watchdog, they are gentle with their masters and people they use to live with.
Like the other breed, Standard Schnauzer must be trained to respect and be loyal to their masters. And also, through trainings they will learn more of positive traits that they should posses. Constructive games and obedience exercises are just few trainings that you can apply to these dogs so that they will learn, will add to their intelligence and will help them to become more alert or active, playful to the children and bubbly.

With Children

Since Standard Schnauzer is playful and active, they are loved by children with these traits but still they should not leave alone with dogs. It also enjoys the company of children because kids are very playful and fun to be with, which Standard Schnauzers love.

Training & Exercise

Standard Schnauzers are trainable and high-energy dogs. They can do a lot of tasks like chewing and digging. They can do walks and jogs unlike other dogs which are inactive. Constructive tasks can be taught to them so that they will stay more active and alert all the time.

Health & Life Expectancy

Standard Schnauzer, if given proper care and love, can live 15 more years or more. As they get old they can have eye cataracts. Dysplasia and tumors are just few health problems that they can have.
