Fascinating Facts

The Treeing Walker coonhound was brought to Virginia by Thomas Walker in 1742. A mixture of unknown breed generally referred to as the “Tennessee Lead” and English foxhound was the origin of this breed. Because of its great resemblance to the English foxhound, many people believed that they are one and the same. It was first recognized as a separate breed from English foxhound in 1945.

Physical Appearance

The Treeing Walker grows 23 – 27 inches and weighs 50 – 70 pounds. Their ears are larger that its head compared to the English foxhound. They possess straight, powerful and long front legs. The coat is smooth, glossy and fine and goes with pattern of bi-color or tri-color.

Grooming

Grooming the Treeing Walker coonhound is very easy; you could brush or comb its smooth and glossy hair occasionally. You can bathe it once or twice a week. After bathing, run a smooth rubber gloves or clean and dry cloth on its coat to make it shinier.

Mood

The Treeing Walker coonhound is kind and gentle. They are also trustworthy, intelligent and curious especially if there is something new that caught its attention. They also love to lie in your bed, sleep on the couch or just lay on the floor. They get along well with other dogs and other animals in the house.

They also love to bury bones in the yard. When they are following a scent that they picked up, they could become oblivious about their master’s command.

With Children

This breed is perfect for children of any age. The Treeing Walkers are active, smart and gentle. They also love to run along with kids.

Training & Exercise

The Treeing Walker coonhound is very easy to train as long as it gets enough exercise. They learn quickly through examples. They are eager to learn as long as their master rewards them for their efforts.  Food-reward training pays off quickly because they would be able to learn something new at the end of the day.

Daily exercise of at least 2 -3 hours of walking and running is the best way to keep the Treeing Walker coonhound fit and healthy.

Health & Life Expectancy

The Treeing Walker coonhound lives for about 12 – 13 years. They are generally healthy breed and no genetic related illnesses are reported on this breed.
