Fascinating Facts
The Vizsla is a medium-sized hunting dog, which is also known as Hungarian Pointer, and Hungarian Short-Haired Pointing Dog. This breed was originally developed in Hungary for the purpose of hunting rabbits and waterfowls. According to the Hungarian language, the name Vizsla means “pointer”.
This breed became nearly extinct after the World War II. In order to save the breed from extinction, the Hungarians and Austrians who are living in the United States smuggled the Vizsla and bred it freely.
Physical Appearance
The standard height and weight of the Vizsla is 22 – 26 inches and 45 – 60 pounds respectively. The head is muscular and dome shaped. The flesh-colored nose stands in contrast with the color of the coat. It has very strong neck with no visible dewlap. The ears have rounded tips and are hanging loosely on both sides of the head.
The front legs are straight and the feet are very much like cat’s feet. In the United States, the Vizsla’s tail is normally docked up to 3/4 of its original length. However, in some countries Europe docking the animal’s tail is considered illegal. The coat has short hair and comes with rusty gold color.
Grooming
The Vizsla’s short fur is very easy to manage. It can get on its peak condition if you run rubber gloves or wet chamois on it everyday or after every bath. Always check for ticks and burrs to avoid skin infection.
Mood
The Vizsla is known for its kind, sweet and gentle temperament. This breed is highly trainable that’s why it needs daily mental and physical stimulation such as exercise. It loves to please the people around it especially its masters.
This breed can get along well with other dogs and other animals such as cats if trained properly. However, the Vizsla should not be trusted with rabbits, hamster, chicken and other domestic animals especially if the Vizsla is exhibiting destructive behavioral pattern.
With Children
The Vizla is an affectionate dog suitable for children. This breed is also an active runner and willing to please everyone especially the children. They could play for long hours without showing signs of getting tired.
Training & Exercise
This breed is very active; it needs hours of long exercise before it is satisfied. Long walks or jogs should be given to this dog otherwise it will channel its unspent energy to other irritating things such as excessive barking, running around the house, chasing other animals and even biting strangers.
Training a Vizsla is easy as long as the handler/trainer/owner employs kind and gentle training techniques. Food reward training method is a very good way of encouraging the Vizsla to obey you during training hours.
Health & Life Expectancy
The Vizsla can live from 10 – 12 years depending on how well the trainer/handler/owner takes care of it. This breed is generally healthy. Hip dysplasia is known to occur on this breed.
